Silk Fibers

We have a wide variety of silk fibers available.  We are in the process of hand-dyeing each type of fiber, but sometimes the demand is greater than we can handle.  If an item is out of stock, it will be removed from your order and you will not be charged (or if you prepay with PayPal, we will refund the money.)  If you need a large quantity of a particular color (or just want to be sure that the color that you want is in stock, please email us at orders@tryourdesigns.com.  We will be glad to tell you if the color of a fiber is in stock and if not, we will let you know when we expect to have it again.  It is quite a job to keep all of these items dyed and in stock as we dye in small batches to insure that the colors are bright and beautiful.  We are sometimes able to dye other colors if you have a particular need, so be sure to let us know if you think we are missing the color of your dreams.

  • Silk Roving
Silk Roving is silk fiber that has been reeled from the cocoon, cut into shorter lengths (about 8 inches) and processed so that all of the fibers are running in parallel.  We sell cultivated silk which is more expensive but which is whiter (and when dyed, brighter) than Tussah silk.  This silk will look more like wool roving top than any of the other silk products that we carry.
  • Silk Noil Fibers
Silk Noil is silk fiber that is very fluffy, looking almost like cotton.  It contains the outer layers of the cocoon and the slubs that are encountered during processing.  It can also contain other matter such as small pieces of bark.  This other matter usually falls away when you are felting with it.  I love working with silk noil because it produces a very puffy "felt" when needle felted with a shine that is amazing.  You can bet that silk noil is in every landscape that I create.  It makes awesome clouds and sky and waterfalls and....I could go on and on....
  • Silk Cocoons
We carry cultivated silk cocoons.  The cocoons can be cut into pieces or used whole.  I like to cut them into spirals and felt them into my work for added texture.
  • Silk Carrier Rods
Carrier Rods are produced when short fibers and sericin coat the machinery that is used to reel off the spin fibers.  When they build up, they are cut away from the machinery.  They come in a variety of shapes and sizes.  They can be ironed flat or manipulated into flowers and other objects.
  • Silk Throwsters Waste
Throwsters' Waste is a by-product of silk production.  Basically it is the recycled waste from reeling off the silk fibers from cocoons.  It contains fibers that get stuck together or don't reel properly.  Sometimes it also contains partially reeled cocoons.  It is a fabulous tool for adding depth and texture to your needle felting.  It is often curly or tangled which only adds to its ability to transform your felting projects.
  • Silk Hankies
Hankies are 10" by 10" squares of silk.  Each hankie is one cocoon that has been stretched by hand into this shape.  They are often used by spinners as it is easy to draft fibers from a silk hankie.  They are thicker on the edges than in the center.
