NEW Tutorial for Dyeing Silk
Roving
As I have been reading on the yahoo group, many of you
have started to move on to dyeing your own silk roving or other
products. I have gotten a number of calls about how I dye the silk
that I sell on the website. So, I decided to take the time to write
out the method that I use to dye my silk roving. I am often told that
I seem to be able to get more vibrant colors than other some sellers.
Part of that lies in the method and the other part of it lies in the
silk. I only use Cultivated A1 Silk Roving. It is the whitest
roving that you can get that is not bleached. If you use a Tussah Silk
roving (basically a wild silk), it tends to be honey colored which will
changed the color of your finished product. You can also purchased
Bleached Tussah Silk roving. It, too, is a white roving, but it does
not take and hold the vibrant colors that you can get with an unbleached
silk. (P.S. Never use clorine bleach on silk because the silk may
dissolve.) For more info on the method that I use, click here.

Iron Shoes Available Again
If you have never ironed with an Iron Shoe, you do not know how easy
ironing can be. I don't know how I ever got along without one.
No more scorched cloth, fusibles making your iron a sticky mess, or problems
with fancy fabrics like silks and fabrics with nap. I love mine and bet
you will love one, too. For more info on the Iron Shoe, click here.

Clover has come out with two really nice needle holders
for felting needles. The older style holds 5 needles. The newer
style holds 1 to 3 needles and looks like a pen. Both are easy to hold
and don't tire your hands and wrists. I really love the new pen
style.
But, if you have a machine, why do you need a hand
needle felting tool. Have you ever laid out a project and when you
take it to the machine, all of the piece shift on you? The pen style
tool may be the answer to that problem. Try laying out your project on
a piece of 2 inch thick foam rubber. You can buy this at most fabric
and upholstery stores. I have a piece that is 12" by
18". I lay out my design on the foam and then use the pen tool
with the 3 needles to baste everything in place. If I am working with
a large project that is all made of roving, then I lay a piece of Vilene
between the foam and the roving. The Vilene helps when you separate a
large piece from the foam.
This is a great way to layout landscapes, seascapes and
the like without having to worry about everything shifting on you. I
particularly like to use this method when I am adding small pieces that I
want to stay in a particular place. Just a couple of punches with the
pen style tool and it is going to stay right where you want it when you go
to use your machine.
